Hunting over moving streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes, the easily recognized kingfisher can be fascinating to watch.

Field marks: Male has blue crest and face to just below the long bill, white collar, blue breastband over white breast, blue wings and back, white underside, blue tail with white bands. Female has a rust-colored band below the blue breastband, and some rust on flanks under the wings.

Size: L: 12"–14", WS: 20"–24"

Similar species: Pileated woodpecker is larger and has a bright red crest.

Season: Year-round

Habitat: Ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, saltwater waterways

Food source: Fish, mollusks, crustaceans, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals

Nest: The adults dig a tunnel in a riverbank and lay the eggs at the far end.

Call: Long, loud, rattling ak-ak-ak-ak-ak, often in flight
